General and Special Powers of Attorney - Public Instruments (deeds)

General Power of Attorney

This is a document by which a person authorizes another (usually a person who resides in Chile) to represent him/her in all legal, commercial, and business matters of any nature, that are currently taking place or that might take place in the future. This power can be presented in any civil, judicial, or administrative authority. The authority given to the proxy is total, meaning, the acts of the representative are of the responsibility of the party represented.

The cost of General Powers of Attorney is US$ 50, plus US$ 5 for every page.

Special Powers of Attorney

A special power of attorney is the one by which a person gives proxy to another person to represent him/her in one or more specific matters. In most cases special powers of attorney are given to buy or sell property, vehicles, or in matters of inheritance.

The cost of Special Powers of Attorney is US$ 25, plus US$ 5 for every page.

In both cases the interested party must bring or send to the Consulate a rough draft of the document or proxy to be given. It is advisable that a Chilean Attorney at Law or other person familiar with Chilean legislation advise the parties involved.
